This collaborative project with RE Group (Returnit) included equipping 40 kiosks, 21 depots throughout southeast Melbourne, and cutting-edge Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) situated in Hallam, as part of the Victorian Government’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS). With over 20 Mechanical Technicians, Industrial and Commercial Electricians and Engineers working on the project, Teoma’s multidisciplinary team was instrumental to the project’s success, having completed all design, engineering, fabrication, and installation in-house.
Under the scheme, cans, bottles and cartons can be submitted for 10 cents each. Once collected, containers are separated and sent to specific recycling centres, turning them into something new. Eligible containers will have a 10-cent mark on the label, and refund sites will be listed on the Victorian container deposit scheme website.
Teoma Group excelled in the complex fabrication and installation of the infrastructure required for the project. Awnings and ramps were designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing structures, enhancing both aesthetic appeal and functional accessibility to the Kiosks. Teoma’s onsite teams handled the installation with precision, managing transport and logistics to mitigate any potential disruptions.
The electrical intricacies of the project included connecting power and constructing switchboards tailored to the high demands of a modern MRF, as well as installing state-of-the-art conveyors to streamline the sorting process. To guarantee that each component performed to the highest standards, Teoma conducted detailed site inspections and tailored adjustments, ensuring optimal fit and function. This commitment to excellence was further demonstrated by assigning team members to oversee each depot’s fit-out, a strategy that ensured smooth, uninterrupted progress and upheld Teoma’s reputation for delivering projects with exemplary finesse.
One of the project’s highlights was the design and fabrication of control cabinets, carried out within Teoma’s own facilities. The in-house engineering team, leveraging their expertise, ensured that these cabinets were tailored to meet the precise needs of the recycling facilities. Thorough site inspections were a testament to the attention to detail of the team, with a focus on ensuring the cabinets met both functional requirements and dimensional specifications.
Teoma’s adaptability was put to the test when faced with supply chain delays. Rising to the challenge, Teoma’s senior engineers expedited the development of six custom control panels, innovatively using readily available parts to meet the urgent deadline. The re-engineered control system included seven Direct Online Starters (DOLs), two Variable Speed Drives (VSDs), and a Category 3 safety circuit enhancing the original specifications with an HMI for improved alarm notifications and operational features. The team’s commitment shone through as they tracked the delayed parts to each site, ensuring on-site commissioning was completed to the highest standards.
The importance of this project is deeply rooted in its fundamental goal — leading the charge in sustainability for the southeastern suburbs of Victoria. With the goals to reduce landfill waste, provide clean commodities for the recycling sector and provide better purities for recycling facilities, this CDS scheme will pave the way for future sustainable ventures.
