Summary
The team at Teoma regularly complete large projects for a variety of city councils. The Commercial Projects Department successfully delivered this facade lighting project on Dandenong’s iconic drum theatre.
The state-of-the-art performing arts venue is in the heart of the suburb and has maintained its heritage 1890’s façade since it was Dandenong’s town hall. On average 23,000 vehicles pass by this iconic piece of Dandenong daily.
The design project was crafted to highlight the heritage features of the building, seeing the installation of over 140 individual lights enhance the historic exterior. Using a Dynalite Lighting Control System, the team designed an advanced system enabling the seamless transition of the light colours to reflect various events and seasons throughout the year. With over 170 events and 85,000 visitors annually, the updated Drum Theatre stands as a centrepiece in the heart of the Dandenong.
Key Project Stats

The team sustained regular communication with Heritage consultants to ensure the upgrades were within the scope of their requirements. In addition to the challenges faced when upgrading a heritage-listed building, the team were faced with the task of completing the project in the middle of a vibrant and bustling city.
Public safety was and is always a high priority. This saw the team managing traffic control and completing the work on elevated platforms.
Project Outcome
Despite the complexities of the works, the team delivered the project on time with praise from the Greater City of Dandenong Councillors and many of the city’s residents. Teoma received a state NECA ‘Excellence Award’ for the outstanding work completed on this project.
Since the project completion in late 2016, the installation has made the building a focal point of the city at night, attracting many residents. Moving forward from the project completion, pre covid, the Drum Theatre saw 85,000 patrons annually attending over 170 performances throughout the year.
For over twenty years Teoma has completed a variety of extensive council projects from multistorey carparks in Stonnington and an even facility backup generator that was installed on top of a seven-story office facility in Kingston.
The entire team thoroughly enjoys being a part of these local Government projects and having a direct impact on the continued success of the community.
